"Most people love you for who you pretend to be... to keep their love, you keep pretending - performing. You get to love your pretense... It's so true, we're locked in an image, an act. And the sad thing is, people get so used to their image; they grow attached to their masks; they love their chains. They forget all about who they really are. And if you try to remind them, they hate you for it. They feel like you're trying to steal their most precious possession."
-Jim Morrison

Just my opine, mean no harm to JM or anyone else!

Jim Morrison, more-so or not, summed up his whole life - which itself is tame, but most people who read it go in awe with adherence to his thoughts.

I'm sure he was a great writer 'cause he was ambitious and assiduous towards it; at least from what I know 'bout him.

Though it doesn't mean that good writers always write intelligent stuff.

There's a heck of difference between, "Most people love you for who you pretend to be" and "You pretend to be someone who most people love" - but they both talk about 'pretense'.

Morrison lived his life in acceptance towards 'pretending for the love of other people' instead of 'compromising for the love of other people'.

I don't know the guy personally, but from what I see, the poor chap led his life without knowing that - You have to 'compromise', not 'pretend', to lure the love of other people.

All he had to do was just replace 'one' word and see the world in a different way!

maybe he just didnt wanted to use the word comprosmise - maybe the word pretend made more sense to him. like it does to me.
